I Think My Human Rights Have Been Violated. What Should I Do?

Have you ever been in a situation where your rights are breached? Don’t know who to turn to or ask for help? As citizens of Jamaica we have various fundamental rights. Check out my blog on “Do You Know Your Right As a Citizen.” These right are protected under the Jamaica Constitution Act of 1962. Human rights violation is when as a citizen you are deprived of the particular rights mentioned above. What should I do you may ask?
Organizations like the mentioned below are advocates for citizens who’s rights are violated:
1. The Independent Jamaica Council is one organization that advocates for citizens who’s rights have been breached. The I.J.C started in 1998 and was previously known as Jamaica Council for Human Rights. The Independent Jamaica council is one of the oldest organization for human rights in relation to providing information about and to promote the observances of human rights generally in Jamaica (Do Good Jamaica, n.d).
2. Jamaicans for Justice is another organization that is an advocacy for breach of human rights. The J.F.F is seen as a a non-governmental organization providing legal services in relation to human rights violations, working on legislation and policy, campaigning for social justice causes, and conducting high-impact research that shape the national human rights agenda (Jamaicans For Justice, n.d).
3. Prime Minister the Most Hon. Andrew Holness is another agency seeing that, the Government has made the commitment to protect the human rights of Jamaicans (Chris Patterson, 2018).
4. Ombudsman and Ministry of Justice protect the rights of citizens.
5. Legal Aid Council is a body within the Ministry of Justice, which help Jamaican citizens, organizes and establishes legal aid clinics with the various proceeding on human right. The office is located at 72 Harbour Street, in Kingston at 948-6999 or 948-7275 (Shelly-Ann Irving, 2014).
6. When Jamaica became a member of inter-American in 1969 some systems which help citizens protect their rights are:
*International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights;
*International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights;
*the Convention on the Elimination of All forms of Discrimination Against Women;
*the Convention on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination;
*the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (The Gleaner, 2013).
